About
When our client approached us about transforming her converted barn, she already had architect drawings in place to create a far more spacious kitchen. The brief involved removing internal walls and opening up one elevation to frame a beautiful picture view of the surrounding countryside. She asked our designer to create a contemporary kitchen scheme, along with a practical Utility/Boot Room designed specifically for bringing the dogs in after long countryside walks.
We knew our barn conversion would be our forever home, so we wanted a kitchen and boot room designed with real care. From our first visit to the showroom, Sue’s relaxed yet professional approach – and the obvious quality of the furniture – gave us complete confidence.
Belinda perfectly captured our vision for a modern, practical space within an old barn.
Our kitchen is now the true hub of our home, perfect for entertaining friends and our large family. Thank you to Sue and the whole team.
Detail
The centrepiece of the room is a generous island, designed to act as both a social hub and the main preparation area. A large induction hob was positioned within the island, alongside a smaller preparation sink — ideal for rinsing vegetables and everyday tasks. Beneath the hob, we incorporated deep drawers and a dedicated pan drawer to keep cookware close at hand.
Careful thought was given to circulation space. The island includes a comfortable footrest and seating area, with stools designed to tuck neatly underneath. This ensures the walkway between the double doors and the adjoining living area remains open and unobstructed.
Practical storage was essential. Beneath the preparation sink, we installed a spacious waste bin system, complemented by an open towel rail and tray storage. A further pull-out unit with internal baskets provides easy access to everyday essentials. To create a strong visual statement, the island is waterfall clad in quartz, with the material flowing seamlessly down both ends to the floor.
Around the perimeter of the room, a separate large sink with drawer storage beneath sits alongside the dishwasher, with additional drawers providing generous storage capacity. On the back wall, we designed a sleek appliance bank incorporating the ovens and an American-style fridge freezer, while the microwave is neatly housed within a wall unit above the worktop for easy access.
A section of wall space near the door to the Utility Room offered the perfect opportunity for a bespoke breakfast station, accompanied by an open bookshelf/display area. Our client was keen to introduce contrasting cabinet interiors, adding a layer of personality and depth to the design. These contrasting finishes can be seen within the bookshelf, an open unit above the main sink, and on the rear of the island and footrest detail. The top of the footrest itself was fabricated in a durable, textured granite — a subtle yet practical finishing touch.
The result is a contemporary kitchen that balances clean architectural lines with warmth and practicality — perfectly suited to modern country living within this beautifully converted barn.
